|I. W. Harper
unavailable in the U.S. for 20 years, I.W. Harper label is back
stateside. It is a permanent brand line under Harper Kentucky Straight
along with a
limited edition release that carries the same name but with different
packaging and a 15-year-old age statement.
Bourbons were recently aging at their Stitzel-Weller Distillery
warehouses, but the whiskies used were distilled at the New Bernheim
Distillery. Their facility in Tullahoma, Tennessee bottled these
Bourbons; the same place their Orphan Barrel releases have been bottled.
In the mid
1990’s, I.W. Harper was pulled out of the U.S. market and offered only
in Asia; primarily Japan. The brand’s history goes back to 1872 when
Isaac Wolfe Bernheim opened his own distillery.
Master Blender Bob Dalgarno uses handpicked
first-fill sherry casks from the top 1% of barrels currently aging at the
distillery. The result is a richer, darker, more chocolately version of
Macallan with a thicker profile and a complex palate of raisins,
orange peel, and ginger. The Rare Cask represents an aggressive and
approach from the typically conservative Macallan. This is bold, chewy,
full-bodied single malt that showcases the deep stocks and the
management from Scotland's most iconic distillery. It's a whisky that
a peek into the most choice sherry-aged whiskies currently available.

Loki - 15 years
11, 2013 /PRNewswire/
-- Loki is one
of the most complex characters in Norse mythology, regularly positioned
as a trickster and often engaged in treachery and mischief. Highland
Park Single Malt Scotch has released a whisky that bottles the
characteristics of Loki while still celebrating the unique Highland
Park house style.
The second release in The Valhalla
a set of four unique whiskies, which take inspiration from the
legendary Nordic gods of old, Loki continues the ground-breaking
achievement that Thor began; a malt designed around the personality
traits of an individual. The Orkney whisky maker has now created
a unique flavor profile for Thor's follow up – Loki, a 15 Years Old
Single Malt. While unquestionably Highland Park in style, the
whisky mirrors the unpredictable, shape-shifting Loki character and as
with the trickster god of fire himself, all is not as it seems.
There are classic traces of sweetness and
spice, being matured in both traditional Spanish sherry casks as well
as heavily peated casks, giving it a smoky punch, while retaining a
light color. The finish is intriguing and complex. A
chameleon-like whisky, constantly changing from appearance to finish,
the expert palates who have savored Loki describe it as, "enigmatic"
and "truly another whisky of the gods."
Pappy Van Winkle
While the annual release of the
Winkle’s Family Reserve series of Bourbons always draws overwhelming
response from Bourbon lovers, the upcoming 2013 release could be one of
the most sought-after yet. While all of the whiskey used for the
23-year-old Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve has come from the old
Stitzel-Weller Distillery in Louisville until now, supplies of that
whiskey are running out.
“This might be the last year…I’d have to look at
the barrel model to be
100% sure,” Preston Van Winkle said. This year’s release of the
Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve Bourbons is expected around October
1, with limited availability for the 15, 20, and 23 year old whiskies. (WhiskeyCast - August 31, 2013
